One of the takeaways from today’s much-hyped Senate Intelligence hearing featuring the testimony of ex-FBI Director James Comey was that the ex-FBI head noted that he was concerned about President Donald Trump‘s trustworthiness. Asked why he documented his interactions with the president, Comey stated he “was honestly concerned he might lie.”
At the top of today’s edition of The Lead, CNN anchor Jake Tapperspoke about that shocking revelation, noting just how stunning it really was for the nation’s former top law enforcement official to be saying that about the leader of the free world.
“The former FBI director told the world today that the President of the United States cannot be trusted in his opinion,” the CNN host said. “He cannot be trusted to tell the truth. He cannot be trusted to uphold the rule of law and he cannot be trusted to allow a DOJ investigation into the Russian attack of the US election last year.”
Tapper went on to bring up Comey telling the Senate that the Trump administration told lies about and “defamed” him, explaining that one can’t come away from the hearing without knowing exactly what Comey thinks of Trump.
“There is no other way to walk away from Comey’s testimony today without thinking the former director of the FBI thinks the President of the United States is a liar who he could not trust and who took actions that he thought were attempts to undermine the integrity of the American justice system itself,” Tapper stated.
