FBI Director James Comey opened his testimony today by talking about his reaction to learning about his firing and the immediate aftermath.
Comey did not go over his submitted statement from yesterday, but did say that the “shifting explanations” after his firing “confused me and increasingly concerned me.”
He talked about what he learned about in the media from President Trump in particular about his firing before saying the following:
“Although the law required no reason at all to fire an FBI director, the administration then chose to defame me and, more importantly, the FBI by saying that the organization was if disarray, that it was poorly led, that the work force had lost confidence in its leader. Those were lies, plain and simple. And I am so sorry that the FBI workforce had to hear them and I am so sorry that the American people were told them.”
